Dr. Chris Furlan

Lead Scientist, Genetase

Meet the scientist

Biochemist and Data Analyst.

I am a biochemist with a PhD from the University of York, specialising in structural biology, cryo-electron microscopy, and genome editing. My expertise includes protein structure determination and the translation of structural insights into mechanistic understanding.

My initial experience was grounded in experimental laboratory work, including protein purification and sample preparation, followed by a transition into computational cryo-EM analysis for the interpretation of complex macromolecular structures. This combined experimental and computational background supports an integrated approach to molecular biology and data-driven discovery.

My current work focuses on supporting researchers and biotechnology organisations in the analysis and interpretation of genomic data, including rare variant discovery and the development of custom bioinformatics pipelines. The aim is to improve the extraction and interpretation of genomic insights through precise, reproducible analysis workflows.

Core Competencies

Areas of Expertise

Structural Biochemistry

Deep understanding of protein structure-function relationships, enabling biologically meaningful variant interpretation.

Genome Editing

Expertise in CRISPR-Cas and related technologies, guiding experimental design and mechanistic interpretation of edits.

Web Tools & Bioinformatics

Developing computational tools, pipelines, and web applications for structural biology and genome editing data analysis.

How Genetase was born

Genetase began as a solo venture with the motivation of bridging the gap between research and real-world applications. What started independently has grown into a specialised effort applying bioinformatics and structural insight in a rigorous, practical way.

Rather than operating as a large organisation, Genetase is intentionally focused and expert-led. It provides researchers with direct access to advanced computational expertise without the need to hire full-time specialists.

As AI, data science, and genomics continue to advance, our ability to interpret biology is becoming more precise and more scalable. At its core, this is about understanding our own code—transforming complex biological data into insights that can guide human health, disease, and open the door to influencing our biological trajectory.

Genetase is still in its early stages, with the ambition to build reliable and scalable genomic analysis infrastructure for research, biotech, industry, and individuals seeking a deeper understanding of their genome through research-use analysis.

Principle

Every genome tells a story. My role is to help make it readable, interpretable, and actionable.

Our Mission

To provide expert genomic analysis through high-quality bioinformatics services for researchers and individuals, supporting projects of any scale or complexity.

Our Vision

To build the world's most trusted platform for genomic discovery, where cutting-edge analysis meets intuitive understanding.

The road ahead

Challenges & ambitions

The human genome is vast, complex, and still largely uncharted. Here's what drives us forward.

🔬 Interpreting Genomic Complexity

We work with vast amounts of genomic data, much of which remains difficult to interpret. Our focus is on developing tools and workflows that turn this complexity into clear, reliable, and meaningful biological insight.

🧬 Inclusive Genomic Databases

Most reference datasets are heavily biased toward European populations. Expanding global diversity is essential—not only for fairness, but to improve variant discovery and strengthen the reliability of genomic analysis.

🚀 High-Throughput Genomic Analysis

Modern genomics requires efficient processing of large-scale datasets. The focus is on developing scalable, high-performance pipelines that convert raw genomic data into accurate, interpretable results while preserving analytical precision.
